Important Information

Apply before 30th June to guarantee your funding is in place for the start of term!

Previously Studied HE

If you have previously studied in Higher Education, please contact a Learner Advisor using the contact details to find out if you are eligible for funding.

Planning to study a full-time HNC, HND or Degree?

If you are, you MUST apply to SAAS for your tuition fees as soon as possible.  You can also apply for a student loan and other grants.  SAAS is the national funding body for Scottish and EU students in Higher Education at College and University providing information resources, support and funding.

What Can I Apply For?

For further information about the loan and grants you can apply for please refer to the 'SAAS Information Powerpoint' presentation which can be found under the 'Useful Links' Section on the right of this page.  You will be able to apply online from April 2019.  The online application system allows you to complete the full application without the need to print the form to sign and return.  The online form provides support in completing the application and give details of documentation required to process the application.  In addition there is a 'Quick Guide to Applying' which provides step-by-step instructions.  This can be found under the 'Useful Links' section on the right.  You can also refer to the 'SAAS-New Account Help' video below.

SAAS Account - How to Apply - Step By Step Guide

Already Have a SAAS Account

You will need your SAAS Reference Number to complete your application for funding.  This must be done each year.

How to Apply

We advise that you read the information in this area before applying to SAAS, to ensure your funding is in place for the start of your course.

  • Your application for tuition fees and funding with your living costs is only valid for one academic year.  This means you must apply for funding in every year of your course.  You should only make one application each year.  If you need help with applying, please speak with a Learner Advisor or one of the Information Assistants using the contact details below.  If you need to make a change to your initial application please contact SAAS on 0300 555 0505 or email www.saas.gov.uk/contact.htm
  • You should apply as early as possible to make sure you get your money at the start of your first term.  If your application is late, your money may be too.  If you don't apply by the closing date of 31 March 2019, you will have to pay your own fees and will not get any living-cost funding.
  • Do not wait for exam results or a firm/unconditional offer before making your application for funding.  Apply to SAAS for your first choice of course.  If you do not get on the course that you originally applied for, contact SAAS and they will change your application to another course or cancel your application (whichever applies).
  • Make sure that you claim for everything that you are eligible for.  SAAS can only pay you for the level of funding you ask for.  Remember, the types of funding available are tuition fees, student loan, bursary and living-costs grants.
  • When you apply you must give all the details SAAS ask for so they can work out how much you are entitled to.  This includes details of you and your household's income if you are applying for the maximum income-assessed funding.
  • The only way to apply is online through the SAAS website.  There is help text throughout the application process that will explain how to fill in the form.  You only need to fill in a whole online form in the first year that you apply to SAAS for funding.  In every other year, you will find most of your details already on the online form, except for your parents' income details, which we need to ask them for each year.  If you don't have a National Insurance number, you will not be able to apply online.  If this applies to you, contact SAAS.
  • You should send clear photocopies of any documents required.  Please do not send original documents as SAAS will destroy all documents after 30 days.
  • SAAS aim to process correctly filled-in applications that are received before 30 June 2018, in time for you starting or returning to your course in the coming academic year.  SAAS will assess your entitlement and issue you an award notice.  This will show how much you will receive in bursary or living-costs grants (or both) each month.  It will also tell you if they will pay your tuition fees straight to your college or university on your behalf.
  • If SAAS receive your application after 30 June 2018, they may not be able to process this before the start of your course.  The closing date for applications is not 30 June 2018 - it is 31 March 2019.
  • If you have applied for a student loan, it will tell you the amount the Student Loans Company (SLC) will pay you for the entire year.  The SLC will send you a separate payment schedule which will show the amount you will receive each month.

It is your responsibility to make sure SAAS receive your application.  You can track the progress of your application using the online services on the website.

Additional SAAS Grants

Other supplementary grants available from SAAS include:

  • Lone Parent Grant
  • Disabled Students Allowance
  • Vacation Grant for Care Leavers
  • Dependents Grant and Student Nursing Bursary

Additional College Funding

Students on higher education courses may also be entitled to additional funding support from the college including:

  • The Higher Education Discretionary Fund – A limited fund which helps students with their rent mortgage costs.
  • The Higher Education Childcare Discretionary Fund – A fund which can help with the costs of a registered child-minder or nursery.  If you do not receive tuition fee support from SAAS you may not be eligible to claim Childcare Funding, please speak to Student Funding for more information.

All HE students will be sent a link to the online application form.

Student Assistance Fund

If you find yourself in unexpected financial difficulties while at College you may be eligible for assistance from our Student Assistance Fund.  Download an application form here.

Student Loans

You may be entitled to apply for a repayable Student Loan.  This will consist of a non-means tested element and a means tested element.  The means tested element will depend on the income of your parent(s) or spouse/partner.

The loan you receive is repaid once you are in employment and earning over a certain salary (currently £18,330 per annum).  The repayments are deducted from your wages in small amounts over a period of time.

Visit Student Loans Company website for more details at www.slc.co.uk
